5. april 9 – 15

I’ve got really high hopes for this week, ’cause I’m determined not to have such a pathetic time as I have for the last couple weeks.  However since I’m – yet again – out every night and I suspect that work might be as busy as ever (two of my colleagues have selfishly gone on vacation), I’m going to be relying heavily on my morning work-outs.  Luckily now that I’ve got my beloved P90X2, and I’m back to eating carbs so I should be able to get out of bed in the morning, that should be a lot easier than the last couple weeks have proven.

I’ve also factored in some fast classes (just 20 minutes long) at lunchtimes.  That way I still get in a workout but I should be able to fit it in since it only means half an hour away from my desk (my gym’s next door to my work).

the plan stan

monday:  p90x2 (total body + x2 ab ripper) + swim

tuesday:  p90x2 (x2 yoga)

wednesday:  p90x2 (balance & power) + kettlebells

thursday:  personal training + ViPR fast class (I’ve never tried this so I’m totally excited)

friday:  p90x2 (x2 core)

saturday: p90x2 (plyocide) + gymnastics

sunday: p90x2 (recovery & mobility) + bikram yoga

Although it looks like a junkie-ish week, it also seems pretty balanced out and I’ve really tried to keep it as practical as possible given the high possibility of work going completely nuts.

the result

the week definitely started off in fine form (helpfully, it was a bank holiday so very few excuses!).

monday

p90x2 (total body + ab ripper):  to my horror, this is the longest of the workouts and I’m going to be doing it on a Monday!  What was I thinking … good workouts, but I need to spend less time scrabbling around for different weights and more time actually, you know, doin stuff.

swimming:  I was slightly disconcerted when a lifeguard came down to watch over the pool (for the first time in four years since I’ve been a member of Virgin).  I tried not to take it personally, given that the only other person in the pool was a Rebecca Adlington-alike who by no stretch of the imagination could ever have needed a lifeguard. Nonetheless I got my 50 lengths in – 30 freestyle and 20 with the flutterboard as rehabilitation for my foot.

tuesday

p090x2 (yoga):  I resemble Yogi Bear more than a Yogi.  That’s all I have to say.

wednesday

kettlebells: predictably, work got in the way.    Will I ever learn?!

p90x2 (balance and power):  what a fun work-out!  High energy, high laughs.  Low ability.  But that will come … I hope!

vacunaut:  I sweated up a storm, but possibly because of the morbid humility of wearing a wetsuit and being hooked up to a beeping machine … I was only walking at 6kph for 30 minutes, and my heart-rate was always under 145 (probably averaging around 125).  So I’m not sure quite why the sweat?  However now that I’m a Bikram chick (a Chickram?) I’m all used to that.  Hard-core.    Uh-huh.

thursday

personal training:  I was knackered this morning – it’s probably all the getting out of bed early.  Managed a few pull-ups (or, more specifically, lateral let-downs) without falling into my shoulders.  RE.SULT.

ViPR:  I absolutely love that almost no-one ever turns up for the 20 minute classes at Virgin because it generally means that you get free personal training!  Double RE.SULT!  And triple RE.SULT – the ViPR was AMAZING!  It doesn’t look very hard – indeed, it looks pretty easy.  It’s not easy.  It’s hard.  And hard is wicked!  I burned 190 calories in 20 minutes and that’s unheard of (I would usually only burn 250 in an hour’s body attack class, for some reason my calorie-burning abilities are very low) so I was super-impressed.  Plus it was a good laugh and Leon, the trainer at Virgin Active Strand was amazing (I feel the need to point that out as I made him do the class for just me, he made me laugh the whole way through and didn’t seem to mind when I dripped sweat on him, which I think is a little bit above and beyond the call of duty).

trapeze:  I totally forgot in my weekly plan that I had trapeze as well today.  Makes up for yesterday’s skipped kettlebells. Cool.  And I got the hang of a Gazelle!  Awesome!  Pics will have to come next week as I’m far too scared of the teacher to consider taking them.  Yet.  But here’s one from back when I couldn’t take my hand off my knee.

friday

vacunaut:  Not quite as sweaty as last time but hard to breathe due to supertight suit.  Over quickly though and even managed to get to work on time – my boss’d be very proud.  If he’d been here on time to witness it.

p90x2:  oopsy.  FAIL.  Got drunk instead.

saturday

p90x2:  x2 core, catching up from yesterday.  AMAZING.  I love this work out and also, I could actually DO most of it this week!  As long as we don’t discuss banana balls, slo-mo balances or ryan sphinx’s.

gymnastics:  finally managing to get the point across to Steve that I’m keen to work, not chat.  Back to handsprings and I was flying around, though it’s been a while and there were times when my head and the mat were on the most intimate of terms.  Fun.

sunday

bikram:  ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!  Due to parking issues missed the class by literally two minutes, and had to drive home again sulking.  In fact double-sulking due to the fact I’d gotten up at 7am - on a Sunday - to get there.  Never mind (**grinds teeth**)

p90x2:  In lieu of Bikram I did a double today – Plyocide, which was just as super-fabulously-fun as last week, and X2 Recovery and Mobility.  Hurrah for the foam roller!  I foam-rolled myself in a coma, could barely get up off the floor at the end.  Signs of a good work-out!

conclusion

DRUMROLL PLEASE … JUNKIEEEEEE!

I’d say mainly junkie this week – I missed a three classes all up but made up for two of the three with extra work-outs, so I’m pretty happy overall.  Bring on next week!
